A letter to the village

There is something that happens in the quiet after a birth. The room empties. The world moves on. And you are left holding something brand new, wondering why no one told you it would feel like this.

Welcome to the first issue of Bloombing News. This newsletter exists because the village that every mother deserves does not always show up. Bloomb is being built to change that. This newsletter is how we stay connected while we build.

Each issue will carry news from inside Bloomb, a personal story, updates on the work, and whatever is growing around us. This month that includes a birth story I have never fully told, some news from our postpartum and perinatal world, and two new arrivals on my back porch that have no idea how perfectly timed they are.

I am glad you are here. You are the village.

From Damie

Five births. Four storms. One reason to build.

After the birth

The moment everything changed

I woke up in the night, drenched in sweat from a nightmare. My heart raced. I relived my traumatic birth, seeing it over and over. I felt hands on me, ignoring my consent. My body had been injured, and the simplest things triggered panic. I felt violated. I felt ashamed to speak of it.

Everyone told me that a healthy baby was all that mattered.

Everyone said my healthy baby was all that mattered. No one asked how I was.

Then mastitis struck. I did not ask for help. I thought I knew breastfeeding after two children. My breast turned red with streaks running through it, and I stayed silent. I thought I could manage it alone.

Later, I learned that birth trauma often leads to postpartum psychosis. I heard voices whispering my name. I felt disconnected from reality. I was afraid to admit this to anyone. A trusted doctor helped me find my way back. I was exhausted beyond what I could describe, unable to rest, with everything needing me at once.

This is one story from my postpartum experience. I share it because only one of my five births had a positive aftermath. That reality is what drives me to build Bloomb. For every mother carrying something she has not yet found words for.

From the back porch

New arrivals, right on time.

Baby birds that just hatched at our house

Two new arrivals on the back porch, May 2026

A few weeks ago I noticed a nest tucked into a beam on the back porch. I watched it every day. Then one morning I came outside and there were two of them, impossibly small, blinking in the light.

They did not choose a convenient location. They did not wait for the right moment. They just arrived, and the world made room.

I have been thinking about them a lot while building Bloomb. New things have a way of finding the time and place they need. You do not always see them coming. You just look up one day and there they are.

๐Ÿ“‹
Medicaid postpartum coverage extended to 12 months in 47 states
The extended coverage applies to NC, SC, GA, and TN โ€” all four states in Bloomb's pilot region. More time on Medicaid does not automatically mean more access to mental health support, but it opens the door. Bloomb is designed to walk through it.
๐Ÿ”ฌ
1 in 5 mothers will experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder
That figure from the CDC has not moved in years. Not because the problem has stopped growing, but because screening and treatment have not kept pace. Most cases go undiagnosed. Most mothers do not tell anyone. Bloomb exists in that silence.
โš–๏ธ
Black mothers remain significantly under-diagnosed for postpartum depression
Research published in JAMA continues to show that Black mothers are screened less often and referred to treatment less frequently than white mothers, despite experiencing PMADs at equal or higher rates. Equity in this space is not a feature. It is the point.
๐ŸŒ
Spain expands national postpartum mental health screening
Our very first subscriber joined from Spain. Spain has moved toward standardized postpartum mental health screening as part of its national health system. The contrast with fragmented US coverage is striking. What the US calls a gap, other countries are beginning to close by policy.

Inside the build

Bloomb is a maternal mental health AI companion built on 15 years of enterprise AI experience, a mathematics background, a patent, and four postpartum experiences that never should have been as hard as they were. Here is where we are.

50 synthetic conversations before any real mother used it
Before Bloomb spoke to a single real mother, it completed 50 synthetic evaluation conversations. That is not optional in a space this sensitive. That is the floor.

Building toward HIPAA compliance on Azure
Bloomb is being built on Azure with HIPAA compliance as the goal, not an afterthought. Mothers in crisis deserve infrastructure that protects them.
